Building in this fantastic place has not been easy. Drinkable water and electricity failures combined with our will to comply with the strict NO CONTAMINATION rules lead us to seek for uncommon systems in Guatemala.
Water supply: Remote wells have been built on the other side of the Chiquimulilla canal where an untouched natural water pool has been found. A large 2 kms long tube network has been installed to supply Isleta de Gaia with pure fresh water.
Water treatment: Contrary to what is usually done in the country, we decide not to use absorption wells. A set of four septic tanks combined with a large oxidation field has been installed. This system avoids having to build on more than a fifth of our land surface....
Biodegradable soap and a kitchen oil special treatment complete the system.
Electricity: Thanks to the direct help of President Alvaro Arzu and Vice-president Luis Flores, we managed to get connected to the electrical national network.
Wood supply: Roof structures are all made according to local style. Palm leaves on a mangle roof structure. Our use of mangle has been largely compensated by our investment in planting 6000 red mangle through a local foundation “Vida Verde” (“Green life”).
Note : We are testing a “Tortugario” which is installed at the site in order to raise and protect small Parlama and Baule (local sea turtles) until they can be free in the Pacific Ocean.
